Contribution of GMDC-GVT to Dense Forestation through Miyawaki Plantation at Smritivan, Earthquake Memorial, Bhujiyo Dungar, Kachchh
Commemorating Lives and Rebuilding with Nature

The devastating Gujarat Earthquake of January 26, 2001, left a deep scar on the state, claiming 13,805 lives and causing unprecedented damage to property. To honour the memory of those who lost their lives and to rebuild with a vision for a greener future, the concept of Smritivan was conceived. This memorial, situated at Bhujiyo Dungar in Kachchh, aims to plant one tree for each of the 13,805 earthquake victims, creating a living tribute that fosters healing and remembrance through nature.

GMDC-GVT's Role in Smritivan

GMDC-Gramya Vikas Trust (GVT) is honoured to contribute to the establishment and development of Smritivan. Our involvement includes supporting dense forestation using the Miyawaki plantation technique, known for creating dense, native forests that grow rapidly and sustainably.

The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki, involves planting a variety of native species close together. This technique results in a dense, multi-layered forest that matures quickly, fostering biodiversity and resilience. The benefits of using the Miyawaki technique at Smritivan include:

  • Rapid Growth: Trees planted using the Miyawaki method grow up to ten times faster than those planted using conventional methods, quickly transforming the landscape.

  • Biodiversity: The dense planting supports a diverse range of plant species, enhancing local biodiversity and creating a balanced ecosystem

  • Environmental Benefits: The dense forestation aids in carbon sequestration, improves air quality, and helps in groundwater recharge, contributing to overall environmental health.

Smritivan: A Living Memorial

Smritivan is not just a memorial; it is a testament to resilience and the power of nature to heal. The forestation effort serves multiple purposes:

  • Commemoration: Each tree planted in Smritivan symbolises the life of an earthquake victim, providing a serene and enduring tribute.

  • Education and Awareness: The memorial serves as an educational site, raising awareness about environmental conservation and the importance of biodiversity.

  • Community Engagement: The project involves local communities, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility towards environmental preservation.

Collaborative Vision and Implementation

The Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) has meticulously planned the development of Smritivdan. Consultants were hired to prepare a comprehensive vision plan, including activity structure, zoning, plantation plans, circulation and pedestrian networks, schematic landscape design, and preliminary costing.

GMDC-GVT’s contribution aligns with this master plan, supporting the plantation of trees and ensuring the successful implementation of the Miyawaki method to achieve dense forestation.
